The Italian American Museum of Modern Art (IAMLA) serves as a valuable resource for those interested in exploring and celebrating the cultural heritage of Italian-Americans in Southern California. Through its exhibits, the museum plays an important role in preserving and sharing the stories and traditions of Italian Americans. For the scope of this design project, the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles (IAMLA) needed a comprehensive brand and style overhaul encompassing their social media presence, brochures, and logo, and asked for an innovative rebranding approach to their previous brand guidelines.
In my approach to the rebranding project for the Italian American Museum of Modern Art (IAMLA), I developed a modern and vibrant identity that resonated with a younger audience. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Sicilian Carts used by Italians traveling to Los Angeles, these carts were known for their intricate designs and bold colors. I utilized textiles from these carts to infuse a contemporary aesthetic into the museum’s branding. The incorporation of sans-serif typefaces and bold, heavy fonts complemented the vibrant color palette derived from Sicilian history, creating a visually striking look that stands out. By transforming existing exhibits into eye-catching billboards and assets, I sought to revitalize their visual identity while honoring the rich cultural narratives associated with the carts. This dynamic approach not only enhances the museum's appeal but also fosters excitement and engagement among younger visitors, making the celebration of Italian-American heritage both accessible and relevant today.
